The First Layer

What the neighbors see: a bungalow porch.

Inside that same wall, we're packing two layers of 1-lb mass-loaded vinyl between staggered-stud drywall. The MLV adds surface density that stops low-frequency transmission the way nothing else can at this price point.

The gap between the stud rows breaks the structural path sound travels through framing. It's not one trick — it's three physics principles working at the same frequency range your furnace operates in.

MLV installation adds STC 12–18 points per layer when correctly lapped and sealed at every seam and penetration.

Impact Isolation

A concrete floor that touches nothing.

We pour a 2-inch concrete slab on a field of 40-durometer neoprene pads spaced on 16-inch centers. The slab floats free of the walls and the subfloor below — it has no rigid connection to the structure of the house.

Walk across it and the footfall doesn't travel. Drop a mic stand and the thud stops at the pad. The IIC rating we achieve in a typical bedroom conversion is 65 or better — commercial recording-studio territory.

Floating slab construction adds IIC 20–30 points over standard subfloor. Critical for drum rooms and any client working in a multi-story home.

Every project starts with a conversation

What would your room
sound like silent?

We start with your floor plan, your budget, and the noise you're trying to kill. Three weeks later, the furnace kicks on and you don't hear it.

Surface Treatment

The duplex on Garfield. The studio inside it.

The client needed to record acoustic guitar and vocal simultaneously without bleed — in the left unit of a 1940s duplex with a shared party wall. We treated the party wall with double-leaf construction and lined the recording face with 2-inch fabric-wrapped panels over a 4-inch air gap.

The panels absorb early reflections and the flutter echo that makes acoustic guitars sound like they were recorded in a bathroom. The air gap behind them catches the low-mid buildup that panels alone can't address.

Fabric-wrapped panels use 703 rigid fiberglass at 2 lb/ft³ density. Absorption coefficient 0.95 at 500 Hz, 1.0 at 1 kHz and above.

The Threshold

The door is where silence begins.

A standard hollow-core interior door has an STC of 20. We install double-leaf acoustic doors with automatic door bottoms and compression seals on all four jamb faces. STC 52. The difference is not subtle.

The garage in Sylvan Park was a weekend conversion. The client — a podcast producer who'd been fighting the sound of a leaf blower in every exterior shot — now records with the garage door open two feet and the microphone doesn't notice.

Our standard acoustic door assembly: 1¾-inch solid-core with neoprene perimeter seals and automatic drop seal. STC 48–54 depending on frame construction.
